A cocktail straw does two jobs: it stirs and it sips. Stirring is what kills a soft one, because the sideways load on a narrow tube is far higher than sucking through it, and a straw that folds while somebody stirs looks worse than no straw at all.

So these are wound stiffer rather than thicker. A narrow bore with a firm wall stays rigid through a stir, and it is a different specification from a standard drinking straw even though it looks like a shorter one.
