The whole reputation of this product rests on a failure that is entirely a specification choice.
The wall, first
A straw wound from two plies has roughly two-thirds of the wall of one wound from three, and it softens correspondingly faster once liquid gets into the fibre.
Under a bite or a squeeze it folds, and once folded it does not recover. That is the moment everyone remembers, and it is a wall thickness decision made before the straw was printed.
The adhesive, second
The spiral seam is glued along its whole length. A glue that softens in liquid lets the seam creep open, and a straw with an open seam is finished no matter how thick it was.
A food-safe wet-bond adhesive is not expensive. It is simply another thing that can be quietly cheapened when nobody asks.
What does not fix it
A wider straw is not a stronger straw. Nor is a heavier-looking paper — grade varies, and the plies are what you can actually compare between suppliers.
Coatings can help and they are the thing to check hardest if you are also making a compostability claim, because a coating is another material that has to be certified.
How to buy around it
Ask for ply count and adhesive type in writing, and ask for a sample to leave in a cold drink for as long as your customers actually take.
That last test takes twenty minutes and settles the question better than any spec sheet.
